Cynthia's Art Teacher Remembers

Cynthia's work was often a playful artistic celebration of the world around her and a world of ancient life forms. The creative investigations of these subjects were frequently created using exuberant color as in many of the still life works and fractured geometric reflections group. Other times, when working with botanicals, ancient life forms (trilobites) or fractured rocks and crystals, her approach was more subdued using primarily warm colors and soft edges. The exploration of the mystery and fascination with these early life forms often has a reverent quality with their subtle colors and dark grounds.

Cynthia's colored pencil works by the very nature of their medium were more controlled, while the acrylic and pastel allowed her to often work more expressively. In some of the botanical and fossil pieces, Cynthia would create a grid or frame within the picture plane to experiment with an underlying structure to challenge the organic forms and rhythms. The fossils and trilobite works come alive with their teaming forms pushing against one another and their often radiant undulating surface marks.

Cynthia's creative playful approach was always open to change and discovery as she worked with the various mediums. Her enthusiasm, hard work, and playful creative energy was a wonderful part of the class for many years.
